Kevin Case was honored with the establishment of an annual Rotary scholarship in his name.  Lou Daniels, who was chair of the school board when he was hired, thanked Kevin for his years of service.  Kevin thanked the club for this generous donation to the scholarship fund. "I can't thank you enough in fact there are no words really to express my gratitude and appreciation.  Kevin went on to say that he talked to his staff "about the importance of keeping a shoebox with those very special cards or letters or thank you's that we all receive now and then.  We don't serve the community for those thank you's but once in while we get a very special one, and I keep a shoebox just to remind myself when I'm having a bad day that oh, I did make a difference in someone's life, that I can do this. Well at the top of my shoebox, there's a letter and it's dated July 15th, 1987 and the letter says, Dear Kevin, I'm so thrilled that you received your first teaching job.  Have you used that social studies unit that we developed together in class? The letter goes on to say, Kevin, do you remember me telling you that one day you will be a superintendent of schools?  Oh my gosh, I was 22 years old, a brand new teacher, and this person is telling me that she saw me as a superintendent of schools.  It was signed Elizabeth Wallace, Professor Central Connecticut State University. She was my undergraduate professor as I was pursuing my teaching degree and she supervised my student teaching.  I keep that letter often because she saw the potential in me. In October of 2006, after being an administrator for several years in three different communities, a school principal, I applied for the superintendency in Canton.  I didn't think I would get it. What chance did I have? Through my hat in the ring, and then you might imagine my surprise, one night just before Halloween, about 9.30 at night I get a phone call.  Who's on the other end of the line, but Mr. Lou Daniels? Not only was Lou on that phone call, but the entire Canton Board of Education was on the phone. And they said, Kevin? we would like to offer you the job. What else was I to say then? Yes, I accept.  Hung up the phone and knew that my life would never be the same. And it wasn't, it has never been the same.  It's been so much better. Having the privilege of serving our Canton students, families, and citizens for the past 16 and a half years.
