There were no birthdays among Club members this week. However ... Victor Mature was born January 29, 1913. A lead actor in such movies as Darling Clementine and The Kiss of Death, Mature is mostly remembered as the guy who pops up seemingly in every biblical epic ever filmed. In 1970, audiences were delighted and amazed at Mature's comic turn in Neil Simon's After The Fox. It was his final appearance. Mature died in 1999.

Larry Haber - will be going to a Toga Party this weekend. Larry seriously asked if anyone had access to a toga that he could borrow.
Jill Glynn - is excited because her son will be starting his own business tomorrow.
Rollie Sterrett - had a card for Ben Dunning who is recovering from back surgery. Rollie invited everyone to sign the card. He also told a funny joke about a guy who calls his wife from the emergency room.
Don Bonner - reported that The Castros are back in town and are looking forward to joining us February 5th. (See Below).
Don Rossler - on Saturday, January 30th, Don's twins will celebrate their 15th birthday.
Dale Bronson - spent Tuesday in New Haven. Both of his medical appointments went well, and, in between appointments, he and Christine visited the dinosaurs at the Peabody Museum.
Joanne Santiago - stated that she is "so happy to be here, and so glad that it's Friday."
Connie Thamm - explained he is participating in the Hyannis Rotary's tutoring program. He is enjoying it so much, it makes him wish he had been involved in the Avon-Canton tutoring program. Connie reminded everyone that the District Conference this year will be in Hyannis. He hopes to see Avon-Canton members there.
Phil Worley - invited everyone to Rotary Pub Night on Tuesday, February 2nd. (See below). He encouraged the several prospective members in attendance to drop in and check it out.

Jolly Lux - was happy to be back for the first time since her trip to Uganda. She gave a quick overview of her mission. She termed the trip a success. She thanked the Club for its support. Jolly will make a presentation to the Club in March.
Gary Miller - saw the new Star Wars movie and enjoyed it.

If Music Be The Food of Love...
Classical pianist Luiz de Moura Castro will be performing at the February 5th Club meeting.
De Moura Castro's discography includes over 55 recordings of piano literature ranging from the complete piano works of Ginastera, Rachmaninoff’s second and third concerti, the five Beethoven concerti, sixteen romantic and fifteen South American releases, Chopin, Bach, Schubert, the French romantics, and music of Argentina and Cuba. His live performances of piano pieces by Liszt are legendary.
A native of Rio de Janeiro and a resident of the United States, he regularly goes on tour across the globe in an effort to bring quality classical music to diverse audiences and to teach a new generation of superb musicians. He is also a tenured professor at the Hartt School of Music, University of Hartford.
The Club will be making a donation to Bridget and Luiz de Moura Castro's charity - ImmaCare, Inc. (Previously known to all as the Immaculate Conception Shelter on Park St., Hartford)

A birthday card was passed around at the meeting for Club nonagenarian Jim McCintosh. President Gary stated that Jim may be attending the February 12th meeting. Jim: if you're reading this, we hope you'll be joining us that day.
Community Service
The Community Service Committee will meet Friday, February 5th at the conclusion of the regular meeting.
Bike Ride May 2nd
Paul Mikkelson outlined the Club Bike Ride scheduled for Saturday, May 2nd. Club members will congregate at Sperry Park and head north along the Rails for Trails. The Ride will be an All Levels event in the sense that members will be encouraged to travel, including the return trip, only as far as they can comfortably handle. It is not yet determined how far north the hardier riders will travel.
Constitution and Bylaws
Don Bonner is looking for two members who would be willing to go through the Constitution and Bylaws with the intention of updating and revising them. Anyone who is interested should contact Don. He will be the Club President from July 2016 through June 2017.

The presentation of three classic silent films, projected above the stage and accompanied by a new musical score by William Perry, will be the highlight of the Farmington Valley Symphony Orchestra’s 35th Anniversary Celebration on Saturday, Feb.27 at the Hoffman Auditorium, University of St. Joseph, 1678 Asylum Ave., West Hartford.Performances will be at 4:00 and 8:00 p.m.
The films will feature three beloved early motion picture stars, John Barrymore in “The Beloved Rogue,” Rudolph Valentino in “Blood and Sand” and Charlie Chaplin in “The Gold Rush.”Under the baton of Music Director Jonathan Edward Brennand, the FVSO will be joined by guest piano soloist, Nadine Shank.The award-winning composer of “The Silent Years,” William Perry, will speak at each performance.
The program will also include three additional works associated with motion pictures: Leonard Bernstein’s “Overture to West Side Story,” Samuel Barber’s “Adagio for Strings” and Alexandar Borodin’s “Polovetsian Dances” from which several melodies in the Broadway musical “Kismet” were derived.
Composer Perry will be honored at a gala 35th Anniversary Celebration and Reception, catered by Harvest Café & Bakery and The Wine House, at 6:00p.m.During the reception guests will have an opportunity to take part in a silent auction for luxury items in support of the orchestra’s Endowment Fund.
Tickets for the concert can be purchased in advance online at $18 for adults; $15 for students/seniors.All concert tickets purchased at the door will be $20.Tickets for the reception including food and drink will be at $25 and can also be purchased online or at the door.

Hello,
We are in need of speakers. We are booked through March 4th and open beyond that date.
Please give some thought to people and groups that you think we would enjoy hearing from. While we are not interested in someone selling or at least trying to, we are open to hearing about products, services and hobbies. In the past year we've had great programs about wine and 3-D printing as examples.
We have a varied group of members with a lot going on in their lives. I'm sure people can bring forward some interesting speakers and subjects.
If you have never brought in a speaker or it's been a while, please help us out.

Dear District 7890 Members - Get Ready!!
The District Conference is planned for April 29 to May 1st at the Cape Codder Resort & Spa in Hyannis, MA. Our theme is Hawaii 7890.
The Cape Codder Resort & Spa is right off the highway and offers convenient parking. We plan to begin on Friday evening at 6 pm with a cocktail hour followed by a delicious Luau dinner.
We are also planning an exciting evening of entertainment. More to come on that.
On Saturday our general session at will begin at 9:00 am with registration and breakfast starting at 7:30 am. Saturday will be filled with exciting breakouts, as well as our Rotaract Conference. If you have a Rotaract Club or are thinking of starting one, be sure to be part of this. Youth exchange students and the South African VTT teams will also be presenting.
It’s been a great year for District 7890 and we plan to celebrate with fellowship and informative breakout sessions. And if anyone can inspire enthusiasm, it's our Rotaractors, Youth exchange students, and VTT teams; they’re an exciting bunch.

Our next Rotary Pub Night (RPN) is Tuesday evening, February 2nd, approximately 4:30 - 6:30 pm at Saybrook Fish House in Canton. Owner Joe Addonizio will provide ample hors d'ouerves, as in the past.
RPN is all about socializing, networking and getting to know your fellow Rotarians and their guests better. Bring your spouses, significant others, partners, friends, prospective Rotarians, socialists, sodalists, soloists, etc.
You may, of course, come and go whenever you want to. Should you wish to eat before, during or after RPN, there are plenty of choices. Click for the Saybrook Fish House menu.

Gable Basket Brigade
The Community Service Committee donated $600 to the Gable Basket Brigade, an organization that helps the Farmington Valley indigent by giving them baskets at Holiday time. Donna Gable explained that each basket contains a complete holiday meal. Last year, 750 baskets were given out. The baskets fed approximately 4,000 people. The Basket Brigade is now in its 16th year. The check was presented to Donna by Peter Vignati.
Saint Patrick's 3 Parish Ecumenical Haiti Mission
The International Committee presented the Haiti Mission with a check for $2,000. The Haitian government requires that all students beyond the 7th Grade be computer literate. The check from Avon-Canton Rotary will buy 6 or 7 computers. Marguerite Jamelle detailed that 100% of the donated money will go to purchasing computers. The goal is to buy 15 computers all together. The computers will be purchased in Haiti to help the local economy.
Kateri Medical Services
On behalf of the International Committee, Rollie Sterrett presented Father Tom Furer with a check for $2,000. Father Tom is involved with Kateri Medical Services, a non-profit that helps the ill and poverty stricken in Nigeria. He pointed out that Kateri's work in Nigeria is very similar to what Club member Jolly Lux is doing in Uganda through the Guiding Light Orphanage. The $2,000 donated by the Club will be used to purchase medicine for the Intensive Medical Clinic.
In The Mail
A thank you note was received from Victoria Dirienzo, the Development Officer at McLean Healthcare. The Club recently donated to McLean's Meals On Wheels Program. The McLean Meals on Wheels serves the towns of Avon, Collinsville, Canton, the Granbys, Tariffville, the Simsburys, and Burlington. 13,885 meals were served in 2015.
