Birthday

Phil Ferrari

Phil has been a member of Rotary "for a long time." (1997) He came into the club at the same time as former member Craig Buhrendorf and returned member Dick Kisiel. Phil is now the treasurer of the club and participates in various service activities like Loaves and Fishes. He enjoys the camaraderie of the club. He also made his annual donation to the Rotary Foundation in honor of his birthday.

Happy Dollars

Joanne Santiago was happy to be celebrating the 50th anniversary of her chiropractic graduation. She was also happy for the sales training she received to help sell ads for the golf tournament.

Johnny Guillot was happy to have rented a house in East Haven to enjoy with his daughters and their families. He and his grandson had a great walk on the beach. The grandson was wearing a T-shirt with a message – “Big Brother.” It took Johnny awhile to realize that a new member of the family is expected. His other daughter wanted to go on a seven-mile trail run. He followed on his mountain bike. He quit at five miles near a boat rental place. He didn’t realize the business would be closed, and he could have been trapped inside a locked gate. Fortunately he was allowed to get out.

Chris Lamadrid predicted that the golf tournament would be a tremendous success. Members and especially the golf committee have worked very hard. That is more the measure than the dollars raised. She appreciated the leadership of Colleen Sullivan and Sue Budde which she described as joyful, informed, and transparent. She was impressed by the new members Cat Pellino, Loren Clarke, and Bill Budde, among others. Chris was impressed by the good spirit and camaraderie.

Gary Miller was happy about the new membership brochures prepared for the upcoming recruitment party. He thinks it will be good for selling ads and attracting new members. Thanks to his daughter, the brochure can be updated as needed. Bob Cave thanked Gary for his efforts.

Tom Voorhees told the club that  former District Governor Frank Wargo (Heather Pantano’s uncle) has had surgery for a brain tumor and was due home in a few days.

Yvonne Gardner was happy to celebrate her35th wedding anniversary. She was also happy to see Brandon Robertson.

Peter Vignati was  also celebrating an anniversary.

Loren Clarke was thankful  for help from Colleen and Sue and others for the auction and predicted it would be great!.

Sue Budde was happy to learn that husband Bill’s cancer is stable. She was also happy that the golf tournament was nearly over. Not bad for two women – Sue and Colleen – who claim to know nothing about golf. She thanked Gary Miller, Gary Hyde, and Phil Ferrari for their help and predicted the tournament would be great.

Past president Luke was happy to be at the meeting. This baby business must be tough: a few gray hairs have popped up. He thanked members for their cards and notes after his son’s birth. Liam Joseph was born on July 18. He is good and sleeps from 11:00 to 5:30. Luke had some certificates for members who were not at the President’s Dinner. The certificates recognized Michael Mezheritskiy for 10 years in the club and Linda Pendergast for 35 years. There was also a recognition for the service Ike Eickenhorst gives the club by coordinating the speakers for each meeting. He does all he can to make sure things go smoothly.

ADG Dave Tedeschi was happy to be at the meeting. He also brought a Halloween basket for the auction.

Brandon Robertson
What's happening in Avon?

Bob Cave introduced Brandon Robertson, town manager of Avon, who really didn’t need to be introduced, because he was a member of Rotary. Bob mentioned that Brandon is now the designated town official for Rotary, helping to coordinate having various town staff to come to our meetings. We are now putting out a listing of speakers coming in the next month as a way of encouraging attendance of meetings by town staff and by other prospective members.

Brandon has been town manager of Avon for 14 years. He’s a graduate of UCONN and studied guitar at the Hartt School. His wife is the town manager in Wethersfield. He says the diversity of the job of town manager makes it hard to think about what he does on a daily basis.

There is one question that keeps coming up: What’s happening on Old Farms Road?

Former Avon-Canton Rotarian Phil Schenk, who was also town manager in Avon, was dealing with Old Farms Road 35 years ago, and there will be another referendum for additional repairs in December. Dec 22 referendum. Here are some of the high points:

  1. An earlier referendum for $5.5M did not require any tax dollars because there was help from other communities. There was extensive bidding. The project. Broke ground in the summer of 2023 and will be complete by October 18. This is for a new road from Scoville to Thompson. Landscaping which will cost approximately $600k will restore aesthetics. The old road must be torn up, and land for the new road swapped with Old Farms School.
  2. There is a design for the East West part of the road. It is projected to cost $4M with the same process for obtaining funding from neighboring communities, but some local funding will be required. A trail toward Fisher Meadows is affected. People don’t seem to want the trail, so the specifics must be decided. There is an undetermined time line for the project. It may be started next year.
  3. Bridge work in 2019 discovered Paleoindian remains, up to 10,000 years old. It is now an archeological site with work involving analyzing the soil and residue from berries using carbon dating dating. The site has been named The Brian D. Jones Paleoindian Site and has been designated a historic site by the state.
  4. In other areas of town, the town council is interested in pedestrian multi-use paths for nonmotorized transportation. One possible location is Country Club East from W Avon Road. The exact format for the space has yet to be determined. There must be consultation with stakeholders in the area including the Golf Club of Avon.
  5. It was a busy summer working on road infrastructure. Many streets had work. There is an objective plan for pavement management determining the priorities for what needs to get done.
  6. Development of Avon Village Center. No word yet on the residential portion that was part of the proposal adopted. Commercial space is now 75% occupied.
  7. There is a possible project on Security Road which would provide 175 apartment units, some of which would include affordable housing. Brandon was enthusiastic about this project.
  8. Schools are projected to grow slightly but the need for new schools is not expected. The Board of Education office is moving to 200 Fisher Drive. Noneducation positions will be consolidated from the schools. There should also be rentable space which would provide funds to offset maintenance and debt service.
  9. Avon has four fire stations. They are no longer adequate for modern equipment Work is being done to determine the cost for updating.
There were additional projects mentioned. Clearly Brandon has enough to keep him busy. The knowledge he has gained in his experience in Avon is clearly an asset for the town at this time in its development. We appreciate some of Brandon’s time  to keep us up to date.

“The FOUR-WAY TEST of the things we think, say or do”:

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all Concerned?
3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
