Birthdays
Hank Frey - is a 30 year Club member. He is a Past President, having served in 1998-99. He was also the Golf Tournament Chair in 1998. Hank recollects a period of time when there were four people on his street who all belonged to the Club. Hank puts in many hours with the Club's Tutoring Program and the annual December bell-ringing at WalMart. He asserts that he enjoys Rotary very much.
Salin Low also observed a birthday since the September 18 meeting.
Happy Dollars
Nancy Nation - is very happy because "it's a go for the golf tournament. The T's are crossed. The I's are dotted, and there's no more asking for ads."
Bill Barnes - had a great time at Cape Cod this past week. He asserted "when you're retired, you can enjoy the Cape after the tourists are all gone." He was looking forward to being a Hole-In-One spotter at the tournament.
Peter Vignati - and Susanne leave next Friday (September 25) for Wisconsin. Peter will play two rounds of golf at the American Club. On September 19, he and Dale Bronson were scheduled to go to CitiField to see the Yankees play the Mets.
Robin DiNicola - helped at an Amber Alert with Tom Voorhees. She said Tom is "amazing." She lauded him for the amount of time he puts into Amber Alert.
Thor Cheyne - missed the last two meetings while vacationing in Venice, Florence and Tuscany. He added "the wine and food were fantastic." Thor also detailed that, in a recent football game, his son kicked four field goals and two point-afters.
Jolly Lux - will leave for Uganda on November 15. She asserted that members of Avon-Canton Rotary are viewed as "heroes" by the Ugandans whom have been helped by the Club's donations.
Ronelle Cipolla - a former Club member, Ronelle was happy to see everyone again. She brought with her Elaine Williams who, like Ronelle, works at Favarh. Elaine is a Day Services Manager there.

On Most Thursday Mornings
A Typical Session
8:10 - Meet other Rotarians at the front of the Big Y parking lot to car pool to Hartford.
8:55 - Arrive at Ramon L. Betances STEM Magnet School at 585 Wethersfield Avenue. After signing in at the office, go to the classrooms to meet the students.
9:00 to 9:30 - Work one-on-one with a 4th grade student. The teacher will assign a student to each tutor. (You will work with the same student each visit). You and others will go to another location in the school for a 30 minute, one-on-one session to accomplish what the teachers ask of us. Usually the time is spent with the student reading to you from his/her reading book.
9:30 to 10:00 - A 30 minute session with another student.
10:45 to 11:15 - Arrive back at Big Y.

Avon Day Is This Saturday!!!
Steve Harris has indicated coverage is now in good shape, but it's not too late to volunteer.
Avon Day will be held Sept 26th behind the Pine Grove and Thompson Brook schools. Contact Steve for details.
Avon Day/Amber Alert
There will be an Amber Alert session at Avon Day in conjunction with the food booth. Tom Voorhees still needs volunteers, especially for the 1 to 3 slot. Tom recently asserted "it's a way of helping out at Avon Day without smelling like grease.
Wolfpack Hockey
Les Zinner is currently gaging interest in another Wolfpack Hockey Night for the Club. Last year's Avon-Canton Rotary Hockey Trip was a big success.Over 30 members and spouses attended, which allowed the Club to purchase tickets at the lowest possible group rate. Please let Les know if you are interested.
Simsbury-Granby Rotary Costume Party
Prasad Menoh (Past District Governor), has alerted our Club that the Simsbury-Granby Club will hold a Halloween-related Costume Party on October 30th. Last year's edition, which was held at the 1820 House, sold out. This year's Party will be held at the Simsbury Inn. Prasad predicts it will be great fun, and he foresees another sell-out. Phil Worley has announced that the October Rotary Pub Night will be held at the Local Grill, which is located in Building #9 at 152 Simsbury Road, Avon.
Recent Pub Nights have been well-attended by Club members, family members and business associates. Please make every effort to attend.
Please note that Rotary Pub Night now alternates between Tuesday and Wednesday each month to accommodate Rotarians who can participate on one of those days but not the other.
Paul Harris Award

Through her donations to the Rotary Foundation International, Robin DiNicola has attained Paul Harris Fellowship status. Joanne Santiago, chair of the Club's Rotary Foundation Committee, stated that $100 a month is a very good level of support, but all members should give what they can afford. Joanne reminded that donations to the Foundation are about "more than just our Club."
Avon Historical Society
Terri Wilson from the Avon Historical Society accepted a check from the Community Service Committee for $150. The donation will help defray expenses for The Society's speakers program. A series of presentations has been scheduled in what is titled "One Square in Avon's Heritage Quilt History." All of the presentations relate in some way to the Derrin Farm Family and their neighbors in West Avon. The first talk is scheduled for Saturday, September 26 at the Avon Senior Center. It will begin at 7 p.m.
Favarh/Avon Social Services

Favarh
Community Services Committee Chair Paul Mikkelsen presented Ronelle Cipolla and Elaine Williams with a check for $2800. This donation will enable Favarh to buy two commercial grade paper shredders and will create more employment opportunities for Favarh's participants. Over 350 persons receive employment and residential services from Favarh.
Avon Social Services
Alan Rosenberg accepted a $3,000 check from the Community Services Committee. This money will assist families in need, especially those who require energy assistance. Rosenberg thanked the Club for its "fine generosity."
Golf Tournament
Much of the Friday, September 18th meeting was given over to golf tournament details and final preparations.
Thor Cheyne announced that next year's Tournament Committee Chair will be Larry Sullivan.
Thor and Nancy Nation thanked all Club members for their efforts and singled out several who, in effect, were sub-committee chairs including: Sue Budde, Larry Sullivan, Michelle Hagan, Linda Pendergast and Ann Clark. Thor asserted that Don Bonner, who put together the ad book, "never once said I can't do it."
Nancy added that the Club's internal slogan "sooner than later" really worked.

New this year, tournament sponsors will receive plaques thanking them for their support. Plaques were handed out at the meeting to Club members who were also sponsors, including: Thor Cheyne, Gary Hyde, Ed Quierolo, Ben Dunning, Phil Ferrari, Evan Cooper, Larry Sullivan, Robin DiNicola and Michelle Hagan.

Important Schedule Information
As noted above, this week's meeting, (September 25), will be held in The Talcott Room at Avon Old Farms Hotel.
The October 2nd meeting will be held in the Talcott Room as well.
