Jackie is 25. In some ways she is not where she expected to be at this age. However, she had a wonderful evening with her family to celebrate, sshe enjoys her work at a good company, and she's a member of Rotary. Not to mention that she's the mother of two-year old Addison. Of course it's wonderful!
Josh Gillooly
Josh is not 25!. He's been a member of the club for nine years and served as president. He works in Human Resources for NorCom Mortgage. Rotary has added a lot to his life.
Phil Worley
Phil would be thrilled to be 25! He has so much energy that it was hard to get him to stand sstill for a picture. He was invited to Rotary by Ike Eickenhorst and Larry Sullivan and became a member on March 2, 2000. He believes younger people (and presumably newer members) should work to be president of the club. He found it to be life changing and a way to learn all about Rotary.
Happy Dollars
Bob Cave - admitted to being 3 x 25 years - wanted to thank again Steve Harris, who was indeed the Avon Day leader in our booth. Steve did his usual fine job of organizing our effort on that day. (And Bob cooked up some mean burgers himself!)
Paul Cioffari - "I'm back!" There were 156 people at his daughter's wedding on October 3, no rain, a beautiful ceremony on the lawn looking out on the Atlantic Ocean. Paul's son (ordained in some universal church) officiated. He highly recommends Southport, Maine for a venue.
Gary Hyde - "He's back, and I'm leaving." Gary's son was being married in NY state on October 10. Go Mets!
Bill Barnes - was happy to hand out brochures about the 35th year of the Farmington Valley Sumphony Orchestra, which has 80 volunteer members. In December the orchestra will actually play in Canton. Bill thanked Mark Steier, Larry Sullivan, and Gary Roman for their businesses' support. This year's theme is Women in Music.
Capri Frank - gave $5 because she was so happy. She was happy to be at the meeting after being away for awhile. She was happy to get a hug from Phil Worley (which made him happy, too). She also wanted to commend Steve Harris for his work on Avon Day. She was happy to have time for a chat with Alan Nasson. Happy Friday.

Golf Programs and Thank Yous
Nancy Nation announced that the golf books would be at the October 16 (this week) meeting for those who need to get some for advertisers they obtained. Then the books go into storage. Please write thank yous to advertisers and sponsors - yesterday.
Rotary Pub Night
Our last Rotary Pub Night (RPN) was Tuesday evening, October 6, at The Local Grill in Avon. Everybody was obviously having a good time, including Butch Tougas, the co-owner, who joined the group for a photo taken by a waitress.
Our next RPN will be on Wednesday, November 5, at Saybrook Fish House in Canton.
RPN is all about socializing, networking and getting to know your fellow Rotarians and their guests better. Bring your spouses, significant others, partners, friends, prospective Rotarians, etc. You may, of course, come and go whenever you want to.
Please note that RPN now alternates between Tuesday and Wednesday each month to accommodate Rotarians who can participate on one of those days but not the other.
Wolfpack Hockey
Les Zinner - has numerous expressions of interest for holding a Club trip to a Hartford Wolfpack Hockey Night. The more people who sign up, the lower the group ticket price will be. Please let Les know if you are interested. Les will be continuing to develop this idea.

Bob Cave didn't really need an introduction. He spoke about a "Work and Save" program which the governor wants businesses to set up in order to assist employees in saving for retirement. 85% of employees are concerned about not having enough saved for retirement. Studies show that 71.5% of employees will participate in a withholding program if the employer offers it. Only 5% will save on their own without employer help. 50% of CT residents rely primarily on social security for their retirement income. The board will present a plan by January to the governor. It is hoped that the plan will be implemented in the spring.
Aspects of the plan:
There will be no cost to taxpayers.
Goal is to help employees retire without needing public assistance.
All expenses of the plan to be paid by participants in the plan. (no required business contribution other than the cost of maintaining the plan)
Wants to make offering of such a plan mandatory.
Portability of funds to employees who change employers
This will require a two-pronged effort encouraging both businesses and employees to participate. According to a study 61% of businesses support the idea.
There were several questions and opinions expressed by members in response.
Topic II - Senior Job Bank.
Bob thanked the club for its support. There have been 1,100 referrals in the program. Most placements are for a handyman or an electrrician/plumber. He especially thanked Gary Miller, Les Zinner, Len Dunstan, Don Bonner, and Chuck Joseph for their helped in interviewing applicants.
In The Mail
Elaine Williams of FAVARH thanked the club for the $2,800 donation to allow for the purchase of two shredders. This allows an expansion of the shredding program and makes two of their clients very happy to be able to be productive!
