Mike Mezheritskiy introduced Brian Magna, physical therapist and owner of Magna Physical Therapy, who gave a presentation on lifestyle factors for longevity. He discussed the Blue Zones project which studies regions with the highest life expectancy to determine lifestyle habits that extend healthy lifespans. His new endeavor is called Healthspan Konnect. He is working with local healthcare providers with the following objective:
Objective: To improve and extend individual healthspans through living a cleaner, consistent and healthier lifestyle to individuals of the Farmington Valley (CT) community.
Brian explained key lifestyle habits in Blue Zones regions include daily walking, strong social circles, sense of purpose, moderate wine consumption with meals, and integrating exercise into daily routines rather than formal workouts. He recommended watching the Blue Zones film on Netflix which presents the factors in the six zones that seem to contribute for lives longer than 100 years.
Exercise
Brian emphasized the benefits of walking for exercise and discussed how Blue Zones residents incorporate movement into daily life. He encouraged finding ways to build activity into routines rather than stressing about workouts. Brian stressed the need for fall prevention. He stated that 12% of all fatalities in CT are from falls.
Nutrition and Diet
Brian highlighted the importance of diet for recovery from surgery or injury. He also discussed the role of a functional medicine approach and seeing a dietitian to address individualized eating habits. He recommended visit the excellent dietician at ShopRite in Canton. She can help with healthy food choices.
Stress management and mental well-being
Brian explained the link between stress and health issues. He encouraged members to identify stressors, understand their limits, and rely on social support from their community.
Social connections and community involvement
Brian discussed research finding people with strong social support live longer due to reduced stress and healthier behaviors. He praised the club's volunteerism and support of each other's wellbeing and interests.
Brian used our Rotary group as a great of example to people who meet many of the factors of Blue Zone communities.
