Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA)
Every year High School Sophomores are chosen from the Avon and Canton High Schools to attend RYLA. RYLA is a program for young persons that was officially adopted in 1971.  Conducted at District 7890's level, RYLA offers local clubs a special opportunity to take part in developing the leadership qualities and good citizenship among our young adults. Our club typically sponsors 4-6 students each year. Our club covers the $175 per applicant cost. This year RYLA will once again take place at Springfield College on Saturday, June 6th.  Gary has been working on reforming the Interact Club at the Avon High School. We hope that the three Avon HS students will form the nucleus of the Interact Club there.

This year's applicants are the following:

Avon High School
Mariae Lee Ek
Shaunak Chimade
Harshmit Verman

Canton High School
Sama El-Hadad (far left)
Rita Gorbenko (2nd left)
Kendall Forslund (right)

The three Canton students were each presented a certificate on the meeting by our club's RYLA Coordinator, Gary Miller.

Interact Club Activities Presentation
Kevin Case, Canton Public Schools Superintendent, introduced Michelle Traub, who is a Spanish teacher in Canton. Kevin stated that Michelle not only teaches the language but also the culture. She is the advisor for the Global Citizen's Club and the Interact Club. Michelle saw Rotary in action while participating in the Fullbright Teacher Exchange program in Senagal. She approached Kevin to ask if a Rotary program could be started at the high school. Kevin, a member of our club, of course said, "Yes." Michelle has since also become a member of Rotary.

Michelle introduced the students that had accompanied her and then invited a number of them to talk about the activities in which they have participated over the past year or so. The activities include their first project, Footware with Care which provides footware and other clothes to homeless people in Hartford. The club has helped with Opioid awareness through A Promise to Jordan. They have raised funds with an Open Mic Night at the Maple Tree in Simsbury. They have volunteered at SpiritHorse Therapeutic Riding Center and Healing Meals. Some of the students have personal projects that the club has adopted, such as, supporting the Ukraine, The African Education Project, and Brian's Angels. They are looking forward to working with us on the outdoor classroom project along with Asst. Superintendent John Bishop.

“The FOUR-WAY TEST of the things we think, say or do”:

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all Concerned?
3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
