Happy Dollars
Bill Barnes reminded us of what occurred 17 years ago today at the start of our meeting when we were at Avon Old Farms. The was the day of the Avon Mountain Crash which took the lives of so many people. All of us who were in attendance that day, had come through that intersection minutes before the tragedy,
President Chris took this opportunity to thank Bill Barnes for agreeing to take on the resurrection of the Getting to Know You project so that we can really get to know each other, particularly the new members. Bill noted that Chris took him to lunch and he got a new job, proving what a great president she is :-}. Craig who started this project has been a great help and has sent Bill all his files. Craig will be back as a visitor in a few months.
Larry Sullivan reminisced that he was the new club president the day of the crash and how worried we were about members who were not in the room with us until we were able to contact everyone to make sure they were okay.
Linda Pendergast will not be at the next meeting because they are going up to Bath, ME to visit their daughter both most importantly to see their grandson, who will be a senior in high school, and has been in ME at a performing arts camp where they will attend the grand performance that they do at the end of camp.
Rauf Majidian who was sitting relaxed at a table, wanted everyone to know how much he enjoyed being on this side of the room.
Cherie Morris reported that she had a chat with Jolly Lux who was sitting with the students under a tree getting ready to play with the new sports equipment that the Millers had supplied. President Chris reported, that she had spoken to Jolly later in the week and that Jolly has tested positive for Covid but is doing okay.
Alicia Canning was thrilled to report that her daughter Sarah, who was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic breast cancer a few years ago, showed no evidence of cancer on her latest PET scan.
Announcements
Phil Ferrari reminded us all that the good we are able to do in the community has a lot to do with the money we raise. This year we gave 27K in local support and another 20K to support international projects. We need everyone to pitch in. We are short on auction items and need items for the goodie bag that we hand out to golfers.
Ann Clark – FAVARH, instead of their Gala, will be having a Motown concert on September 10 at Simsbury Meadow. Ann is organizing a Rotary table at this event with tickets at $50 a person.
Alicia Canning noted that we will be doing a Pencil Box project again this year.
We heard from Rebecca Brigs, who is assistant to the Director of the Canton Senior Center, who reported on a back to school program. They are collecting school supplies for school kids in need. They will be holding fund raiser at Shop Rite on August 6 and 7. They are looking for our help on those days to hand out flyers and they will also need help in packing the back packs and distributing them. They are also in need of donations for backpacks and she was encouraged to submit a funding application to the community service committee.
President Chris reported on the success of the Senior Luncheon with over a 100 guests served. Chris gave special thanks to Chuck Joseph for his cooperation, flexibility, and contributions to making this a success.
Starting in August, the last meeting of every month will be held at FAVARH. These will be Club Days so that we can do a better job of getting to know each other and reestablish why we are Rotarians.
