Happy Dollars

Richard Heath gave a happy dollar on behalf of his wife Chris who called from Saint Augustine FL to say high to everyone.

Gary Roman let us know that his daughter, who was supposed to give birth on 1/31 was told by the doctor that if she didn't give birth by today (2/2) she was to come into the hospital.  This morning they got a call that there was no room at the inn.  The hospital was FULL.  So it has been delayed a few more days.

Alicia Canning noted that this Wednesday (2/7) Interact would be meeting at Avon High School.

Joanne Santiago reminded everyone to get their tickets sold for the upcoming Taste of the Valley.

Ann Clark was happy to see good news on the front page of the Courant for a change when they did an article about Boy Scout Troop 274 and 2 twins welcomed their dad home after 6 months of service.

Tom Voorhees reminded everybody to be kind to our CPAs as we may not seem them again till the end of tax season.

Craig Buhrendorf said that he should have given a dollar last week for Capri's eloquent endorsement of her dental experience with his wife.  Craig and his wife are going to New Zealand next week and he noted the help he has gotten from Lisa Barall and her husband Todd, who have been there, as another way of Rotary networking.

Beverly LaPlume
Avon/Canton Animal Control Officer

Beverly LaPlume is the Animal Control Officer for Avon/Canton.  She is also a nuisance wildlife officer.  Beverly has one of those full-time part-time positions with many varied responsibilities.  She clearly indicated that the major problems in her position stem from two legged and not four legged animals.  She shared a number of stories about her work and she showed herself to be a great public servant who goes above and beyond.

The animal control officer is responsible for many things.  She maintains and manages the Dog Pound.  There is a$15 retrieval fee, if your animal is picked up plus a boarding fee, if they stay overnight.  She answers call from residents on a daily basis dealing with neighbor complaints involving dogs or nuisance wildlife issues.  Neighbor complaints involve barking dogs and roaming dogs.  She also deals with animal cruelty issues and patrols parking lots for dogs left in hot or cold cars.  She investigates cases of dogs left tethered outside in extreme temperatures.  She deals with domestic animals that have done property damage.  She is also responsible for following up on owners who are delinquent or don't license their dogs.  She can issue tickets for infractions such as dogs roaming off leash and for unlicensed dogs.  She tries to use education as the first method of dealing with problems.  While she normally does not deal with birds or squirrels who get into the home.  If a bat gets into the home, she will remove the bat as it has to be tested for rabies.  Bat saliva can transmit the disease so a bite is not required and you may not know if you come into contact with the saliva while sleeping.

Special Announcements

Taste of the Valley is coming up soon.  If you know of any additional restaurants that might like to participate it would be useful.  Sign-up sheet next week for volunteer assignments.  We will need less help this year than last year but still need help.
